Inflammation of the Bursa Under the Calcaneous

Between the heel bone and fat pad there is a small sack of fluid called a bursa or bursa sac. If this bursa becomes inflamed through overuse, pain can result. This is similar to injuries to the bursa sac in other parts of the body, like the elbow for example
The solution is rest. Padding with a hole for the bursa to fit in can be made, but this should be secondary to resting the injured heel. If this injury goes on for a long time a podiatrist might give a steroid injection to help the injury to heel, as well as to ease pain. You should see you podiatrist any time you are having foot or ankle pain, especially in the heel. There are lots of causes for heel pain, and they may be concurrent with or the actual cause of the bursa inflammation. You should see your podiatrist, as they are the expert on solving heel pain issues.
