Most of the injuries of the foot and ankle related to basketball are caused either by overuse or acute trauma. Acute trauma is a one-time injury, for example an ankle sprain or a tendon or ligament tear. The other injuries are due to overuse, these are usually chronic or stress related injuries. These overuse injuries include: Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, posterior tibial and peroneal tenosynovitis, metatarsalgia, and stress fractures. These are a concern because they can grow into larger problems (like a stress fracture becoming a true fracture, or they can increase your risk of a one-time, acute injury.
